New “Lord of the Rings” Film Set to Hit Theaters in 2026

Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced on Thursday the eagerly anticipated addition to the “Lord of the Rings” movie series, one of the most iconic film franchises in cinematic history. Scheduled for release in 2026, this installment is one of two new films confirmed by Zaslav.

Andy Serkis, acclaimed for his portrayal of Gollum, will not only reprise his role but also take the director’s chair for the first of the two films, tentatively titled “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” Adding to the excitement, Peter Jackson, the visionary behind the original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the subsequent “Hobbit” movies, will serve as a producer for these new ventures.

Based on the timeless literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, the films transport audiences to the enchanting realm of Middle-earth, populated by humans, elves, dwarves, and hobbits.

The franchise’s previous installments have collectively amassed nearly $6 billion at the global box office, with the 2003 film, “Return of the King,” clinching 11 Oscars, including the prestigious Best Picture award.

In addition to the forthcoming live-action films, fans can anticipate the release of an animated “Lord of the Rings” feature titled “The War of the Rohirrim,” slated to hit theaters this December.
